Cataract surgery mega camps Present crisis
First surgery was done at BR Hills way back in 1981. One Soliga hill tribe was operated at Dr. Sudarshan's Tribal hospital. Sri Vivekananda Sevashrama has progressed by leaps and bounds and today we conduct 200 and more surgeries in a day at any of our mega camps. In a two day camp we do 400 surgeries. In a two day camp we conducted 504 surgeries at Hagaribomanahalli in Bellary district of Karnataka State, India. We have to our credit 29,000 IOL cataract surgeries. We have also conducted 120 surgeries for children at UshaKiran eye hospital, Mysore. We carryout extensive school children eye screening in Mysore and surrounding districts. We distribute free spectacles for correcting vision defects in school going children..We examine 20,000 children for vision defects and issue 2000 free spectacles per year.
This year we have started school screening project in & around Hagaribommanahalli in Bellary district of Karnataka State India, We have screened 5000 children in higher primary & High schools of he taluk. Mytri association with Sarva shikshan Abhayan of education department have coordinated with Sri Vivekananda Sevashrama in conducting screening. six children have been referred to ophthalmologist for further examination and suitable corrective action, 230 spectacles are being issued to correct vision defects. This is only the beginning of the project Sight to sightless for children in Bellary district. We hope to expand the activities further depending on the cooperation of the education & health departments. They have their own children eye screening programmes and we have to coordinate our activities with them and see that duplication of work does not happen.
