Cataract surgery mega camps Present crisis
First surgery was done at BR Hills way back in 1981. One Soliga hill tribe was operated at Dr. Sudarshan's Tribal hospital. Sri Vivekananda Sevashrama has progressed by leaps and bounds and today we conduct 200 and more surgeries in a day at any of our mega camps. In a two day camp we do 400 surgeries. In a two day camp we conducted 504 surgeries at Hagaribomanahalli in Bellary district of Karnataka State, India. We have to our credit 29,000 IOL cataract surgeries. We have also conducted 120 surgeries for children at UshaKiran eye hospital, Mysore. We carryout extensive school children eye screening in Mysore and surrounding districts. We distribute free spectacles for correcting vision defects in school going children..We examine 20,000 children for vision defects and issue 2000 free spectacles per year. The camp crisis - Part One
Cataract development is a natural phenomenon which cannot be prevented. Natural clear lens looses its clarity gradually and the vision is blurred. If cataract is mature patient is almost blind due to cataract. Fortunately it is curable. At some age, normally after sixty years, people will get cataract. There is no medical treatment, only surgical treatment is available for the present. The affected lens is to be removed & Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) is to be implanted during surgery itself. This is a simple operation which takes less than ten minutes including preparation. Though the surgery is simple it is costly in private nursing homes. It may cost Rs. 25 to 30 thousand. Overheads are the main cause for the increased cost of surgery. People are prepared to spend hefty sum to satisfy their ego. These sisters had cataract & so they were considered as blind. Our doctors at Raichur Mega Cataract surgery camp on 3rd December 2013 conducted surgery. They are more than 20 years & could not see the light. After surgery they have regained eyesight. We have to congratulate ourselves for this achievement. This camp was organised by Lions Club of Raichur. It was well organised & we thank them for all the arrangement that made our stay comfortable.
